Business Card Display Exclusivity Deals

Today I had an email from someone who is interested in buying business card displays, but was slightly worried that he would go and present the biz card display to a business owner, and then have the business owner turn around and buy a display for themselves directly from a manufacturer over the internet. Fair point!
You will find that most people you show the display to will really like the concept, so there’s always that slight risk that they could listen to everything you have to say, then turn around and buy a display elsewhere… only a very small chance of this happening, but possible.
So what’s a possible solution?
Over all the years i’ve been involved with business card display advertising, i’ve always tried to arranged exclusivity for the immediate area/county/parish which my client lives in. In some cases, people have taken the rights to the entire state they live in. Why do I arrange exclusivity for my clients? Two reasons…
1) Having the exclusive rights to an area increases your chances of success, because you have in writing from the manufacturer that they “agree not to send displays in the pre-defined exclusive area to anyone else apart from yourself”.
2) Being the exclusive operator in your area gives you the opportunity to sell the biz card displays also!
EG. Let’s say you present the display to a business owner and they don’t end up wanting to either host or advertise in your display. If you had the rights to sell the displays, wouldn’t it make sense to then try to sell them a display as plan B? Once you outline the benefits to them of owning a display, like… it’s an excellent additional revenue stream for them, it’s an additional ’business within their business’ which will add ’saleable’ value if they ever decide to sell their business… then you could make some extra cash for yourself that way!
