How an Underpaid Helicopter Flying Instructor Doubled His Income Within Weeks with a Simple Business Idea
One of my best mates Michael Franks is an extremely good, and very passionate helicopter pilot based in Torrence, California. Mick has fought hard to build up his flying hours through instructing… he has many students that are all going places thanks to his patient way of teaching.
As time has gone by, Mick has been brainstorming other ways to make money within the aviation business to increase his cash flow. His most recent idea is simple and smart. Mick focused his new idea on a market that people get a ego kick out of… and that’s why I say ‘smart’, because that is a market that will never die (the ‘catering to the human ego’ market)! Here’s what his idea is…
Mick takes up an experienced photographer in his helicopter, and what they do is fly around to expensive homes in the area and take high quality photos of random houses from a low level (or as low as allowed in that particular airspace). The zoom on the camera gets them right up close to each individual house anyway. Next step…
They then note down the house and street they just took a photo of using the cockpit GPS system. This GPS plotting lets them know which home to approach once they get the photos developed. They then send the home owner a well presented ‘mini’ portrait picture of their as viewed from above via Fedex/UPS with a letter attached outlining the pricing for larger more blown up picture that would look amazing in any loungeroom or office wall! See what I mean about a simple business idea that appeals to the ego??
In a nut shell, they are taking portrait quality photos of people’s homes then selling it to the home owner soon after. I would think that 50% of the people would just buy it anyway because they are so impressed with the professionalism he presents it with and the expense involved to snap the shot.
It’s amazing what thinking outside the square can do! Mick has also developed a market for himself amongst real estate agents who like to get aerial photos for marketing purposes on behalf of the vendors home they’re selling.
Nice one Mick!
If you’re in the LA, California area, Mick will be happy to take you up for a trial introductory flight and explain what he does and how it all works… well worth it! Here he is… and the company website.
