Are You Having Trouble Getting Advertising Customers?
Hi Everyone,
Are you having trouble getting advertising customers?
This week i’ve had about 4 emails asking the same type of question about how to get advertising customers before buying business card displays, and then using the funds from the ‘pre-deals’ to buy displays. Here are two points I would like to make regarding this way of thinking…
1) You will never get a true indication of the power of this business by trying to sell something that you can’t actually show people. I’m not saying it’s not possible to get customers before buying displays, but what I am saying is that most people are visual and like to see what they’re actually getting for their money. Showing a business owner the display increases your chances of getting a sale 10 fold.
The best thing you can do here is put yourself in the buyers shoes. EG. Let’s say your a plumber, and two sales people come in your door selling the same thing, but one of the sales people actually has the product and can show you how the display works, and can also show you one of your business cards actually coming out the display infront of your eyes… meanwhile the other sales person gives you a flyer and simply explains the concept to you. Which one are you most likely to buy from?
It’s no different from a door-to-door sales person selling frying pans. If one sales person can give you a live demo of how great the frying pans are, and the other can only explain it to you… you are most likely to buy from the one who ’showed you’ how it worked… wouldn’t you agree? It’s the same principal with biz card dispensers.
2) If you really can’t afford displays and need to resort to pre-selling advertising spaces, then this method below is by far 100% the best way to go about it… it’s simple, business owners will be open to chat with you about your advertising deal, and you can walk into businesses all day long with no fear using this approach. I personally designed this method to specifically assist biz card display operators gets more customers… but it works for any type of advertising sales.
One guy from the USA emailed me recently and told me it’s working extremely well for him. He had never sold advertising in the past, and also had a huge fear of walking into a business to make a sale. Here’s exactly how he did it for under $150 before buying displays. Certainly do this as step one if you feel uncomfortable about approaching business owners. Details here . It’s an excellent confidence booster… guaranteed!

Hi Dustin… please see answers below your paragraphs
Hello Dean,
If you would, I’d love to hear your feedback, and possibly get some coaching… My idea after receiving my 1st display was to first secure a location in town…let the location owner know that within 3-4 weeks I will have all the slots sold, then will mount the display once I have the advertisers onboard.
### Good idea
Once the location is signed, I will go sell the advertising spaces on 6 and 12 month contracts. 6 mo - $225 and 12 months at $365. This revenue will then be used for purchase of 10 displays.
### Good low risk move, but it can also pose risks. Buying one display first has been talked about in the past on this blog, and you should only take this path of one display if you really can’t afford any more. Having just one biz card display can cause you to not take the business seriously, which can defeat the whole purpose of buying the business in the first place.
Here’s two thoughts on how to sign businesses quickly seeing that I’m only starting with one display. (Hey, I can use all the percieved value I can muster here!)
First, I’ll sell each business on an exclusive deal, so that their buisness category is secured once they sign. (Creating scarcity and urgency here)
### Agreed
Second, I’ll be very upfront with each advertiser, and let them know that within 2 months, I plan on having 10 displays up around town, and I “may” use their business card as fillers,(#Excellent idea) until I can sell each slot. I won’t guarantee it, but this way each advertiser will gain additional exposure at no extra cost. I’m sure the advertisers would understand why I would do this being that this is a whole new advertising medium in my area.
Once 10 displays are up and running, I’ll simply replace the fillers with paying advertisers.
### Good idea to keep the display looking busy, but just make sure you leave one or two spaces that say ‘ADVERTISE HERE’ for lead generation purposes.
That’s my beginning strategy for now. Any input or suggestions would be great!
Also, let me know if you’d like these types of messages sent to the forum rather than email.
### This one is a good forum one, then everyone can see it. Anything about buying manuals or displays is best emailed to me directly.
Thanks Dean,
Dustin
### My pleasure!
