Interesting Idea - Advertising on Shop Floors or ‘Floorvertising’
Here’s a potential money making idea for all those readers who are in the sales and advertising industry. Have you ever thought about placing advertising on shop floors? I certainly hadn’t up until now. Obvious place when you think about it isn’t it? We usually think about billboard advertising, internet advertising, magazine advertising, newspaper advertising etc as the obvious ways to get a message out to the people, but what about the largest advertising space available in almost every shop we walk into? The floor! Surely there’s a way to make money from this… there has to be.
How did I think of this idea? I actually saw it in action, and it caught my eye big-time. Here I was in this small town of only 4,000 people with only 10 different shops in total… one of these shops being a very small hardware store. I went into the store and walked down the isles having a general look around when a bright red message written across two standard size little white tiles on the floor said “Need a Plumber? Guaranteed Work, all Jobs Complete On-Time… Call….”. Very simple message, but very well done. Not only did I think it was clever to write an advertising message on the floor, but on top of that, I looked up and guess what I was surrounded by? Yes, plumbing supplies. Targeted advertising… love it!
My brain went wild when I saw this… unique marketing ideas that I haven’t seen before really excite me! So why would this particular idea excite me so much? Well you could make money in such a variety of locations with this advertising concept… like any store you walk into that has a blank floor! (1000’s of those around!) How could you make money from this? The general idea would be for you to find the locations (not very hard in this case), then JV with the owner of the store and do some kind of split on the revenue generated. Maybe you could put a quick phone call into a local sign writer… they’ll tell you in a heartbeat what to use and the best way to go about it. Also ask them if they’ll write it for you and how much it’ll cost… that way it’ll be neat and professional looking. Imagine if you had 10 different photos/examples to show new potential advertisers as part of your pitch to sell the advertising space! Food for thought. You could also add this thought into the mix if you decide to ‘make a go’ of this idea. A store could also advertise other businesses on their floor that aren’t even directly related or in competition to their products to help offset their lease/rent costs? (That last sentence would make up part of a sales pitch when finding locations to display the advertising…wink). Remember that most business go broke, so any incoming funds will certainly help them stay afloat. Sit back and have a think about this idea for a moment… it might be a potential gold-mine for you? Could you package it up with whatever advertising you’re currently selling to enhance you current offer? How could the pricing be structured… they pay for the sign writer costs plus a monthly fee? Hmmmm.
Has anyone seen this before, or have any knowledge, feedback or ideas around this idea?

Hi Dean,
I have seen this type of “floorvertising” starting in 1997 in Ontario while I worked at a convenience store. The two I remember are for Effem Foods for Mars Bar, as well as our federal lottery, Lotto 649, advertised through a provincial entity, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG).
For Effem Foods, a new product launch would entail placing these floor stickers starting from the designated spot all the way to the cash.
As for the Lotto 649 sticker, that would normally be on the way into the store.
A length of time would be agreed upon prior to placing the sticker. I have seen these stickers last anywhere from 2 weeks all the way upto 4 months (all dependant on floor prep)
Anyway, just thought I would share some feedback.
